HBO Head Offers Updates On Game Of Thrones Prequel Shows

The watch has ended for most Game of Thrones fans but that doesn't mean that HBO is saying goodbye to the universe created by George R.R. Martin. There are at least three Game of Thrones prequel shows (or successor shows, as Martin prefers to call them) that are being developed right now. Luckily, we have some interesting updates about the upcoming shows from the network's programming president.

Casey Bloys, HBO programming head, recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the Game of Thrones successor shows. Although Bloys refused to discuss release dates or the like, he also revealed the shows' current stages.

"I am not clarifying anything other than yes, we shoot the first pilot in June. There are two more in development and beyond that, there's nothing else to report," Bloys said.

If you were hoping that the two other prequels will be getting a pilot soon after the first successor show, Bloys says you probably shouldn't hold your breath. "There are no plans currently to put anything more in development. We're not actively looking or going beyond what we've got in the current pilot," he said.

There is little doubt that there will be comparisons between Game of Thrones and the pilot that is being written by Jane Goldman. However, Bloys stated that the first successor show, which is being shot under the working title Blood Moon, will be completely different from what David Benioff and DB Weiss created.

"There's no scenario where Jane saw the episode and said, 'Oh, I better change this, that or the other thing.' We're trying to have a show that feels like its own show within the universe but we're not trying to replicate the same show. It's not the same characters, it's not the same dynamics. It's not like we're taking the existing show and saying, 'X, Y and Z worked, so let's do that.' It's a different writer, creator and different feel and different world," he said.

We're certainly hoping to learn more about the new series once it begins filming next month. The first Game of Thrones prequel show has not yet been given an official release date.
