GOTG's Peter Serafinowicz Tells The Story About How He Was Cut From Solo: A Star Wars Story And Didn't Even Know It

Guardians of the Galaxy actor Peter Serafinowicz thought he was the voice of Darth Maul in Solo: A Star Wars Story until after the film's premiere.

For those who don't know, the actor voiced the iconic Sith in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, where we are first introduced to the character. However, in Darth Maul's animated incarnations in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, Sam Witwer was the one who voiced him.

Serafinowicz recorded the lines for Darth Maul in Solo, but Disney ultimately went with Witwer, and apparently waited days after the premiere, which he wasn't invited to attend.

In an interview with Collider, the actor revealed that he was contacted to be part of Han Solo spinoff. He went in and spoke to Ron Howard about how Darth Maul has changed over the years, even joking that his talk with the director was 29 minutes longer than his discussion with Star Wars creator George Lucas.

However, Serafinowicz's recording never made it past the cutting room floor. The Darth Maul you hear in that unexpected Solo: A Star Wars Story cameo was of Witwer, who voiced him in The Clone Wars and Rebels.

Serafinowicz, unfortunately, wasn't informed about this though. "I was gonna take my kids and their friends, and it'd be like... a cool thing, you know, we'll just go with your friends to see the new Star Wars film, and your dad's in it," he recalled.

However, Serafinowicz wasn't invited to the Solo premiere. He just knew about it on Twitter. A couple of days after seeing pictures from the premiere on social media, he got an email from which he was officially informed that they decided to go with Witwer's voice because it was better for the film as far as continuity goes.

This direction made sense since Maul wasn't resurrected in the movies. His return was made canon in The Clone Wars and Rebels. However, the situation could've been handled better.

"It was a bit disappointing," Serafinowicz said, adding that he ultimately decided to "boycott" Solo.
