George Takei Gets His Own Graphic Memoir

Last weekend, George Takei joined the April Fools spree and pranking the online community with a "bombshell' announcement saying that he's running for the 2018 Congress in an attempt to unseat House Intelligence Committee Chairman and California Chairman Devin Nunes.

Now it seems like the Star Trek legend is all business as the Hollywood Reporter reveals that the funnyman and Hollywood celebrity is working on an IDW Publishing graphic memoir for fans.

Focusing on the time his family spent in the Japanese-American interment during World War II and his path to fame, the graphic memoir which is to be scripted by Steven Scott and Justin Eisinger gives readers a taste of the actual life of the celebrity.

"I have spoken publicly on numerous occasions during my life on the unjust internment of Japanese Americans in my ongoing mission of spreading awareness of this disgraceful chapter of American history," Takei said in a statement. "I do this, and will continue to do so, in the hope that my personal experience can serve as a cautionary reminder of our past leaders' mistakes, and that as a society, we can learn from those transgressions and not repeat them."

"When the opportunity to tell my story in the form of a graphic novel presented itself, I recognized the value in making it easily accessible for our youth to discover and digest the material, bringing attention to an important and relevant issue, while preserving it for generations to come," he continued. "We live in uncertain times, and if stories such as mine can inspire us to do better and encourage positive change, I want to share it with as many people as possible, no matter who they are, or where they come from."

Best known for playing the USS Enterprise's lieutenant commander and then full commander, Hikaru Sulu in the original Star Trek series, Takei is a Hollywood icon and prominent LGBT and human rights activist whose story is definitely worth telling.

The graphic novel is slated for release sometime in 2018.
