George R.R. Martin still has at least two more A Song of Ice and Fire books to write, but it will probably take more than 5 years before A Dream of Spring (Book 7) will hit shelves. Winds of Winter doesn't even have a release date yet, but the acclaimed author teased at the Emmys that with the amount of history he's written for the franchise's backstory, there's a lot of content he can use for prequels when his epic fantasy series ends.

Speaking to Deadline, Martin said: "I do have thousands of pages of fake history of everything that led up to Game of Thrones, so there's a lot of material there and I'm writing more. At the moment we still have this show to finish and I still have two books to finish so that's all speculation."

As much as I like the idea of prequels, I just want to see how George R.R. Martin will conclude his epic, but of course, we'll probably see how it ends in the show before A Dream of Spring comes out.

The show just won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series for the second year in a row.

Game of Thrones Season 7 will premiere sometime in 2017.
