The recent episode of Star Wars Rebels featured the Mandalorian warrior Sabine Wren wielding the darksaber, which was heavily featured in the previous Star Wars animated series, Clone Wars.
In the Star Wars Rebels episode Trials of the Darksaber, Sabine trained with Kanan and Ezra while the significance of the weapon was being explored. However, a new episode of Rebels Recon discusses the importance of the darksaber behind the scenes.
Executive producer Dave Filoni said that the darksaber came from Star Wars creator George Lucas after flearning about the villain Pre Viszla using vibroblade in his duels against lightsabers.
The animated series is currently on haiatus, and the show will return to Sabine's story on February 18 with Legacy of Mandalore.
