George Lucas America’s Wealthiest Celebrity Thanks to Star Wars and Indiana Jones

It looks like George Lucas is now the United State's wealthiest celebrity.

According to a report by Business Insider, Star Wars creator George Lucas is America's richest celebrity, wading in an estimated net worth of $6.4 billion. Not only is this wealth thanks to the Star Wars franchise, one of the largest and most popular science fiction franchises in Hollywood history, but because of the co-creation of Indiana Jones.

Starring Star Wars Han Solo actor Harrison Ford in the titular role, the Indiana Jones franchise which began with the Raiders of the Lost Ark now has four feature films with a fifth on the way, Indiana Jones 5. The franchise even has its own television series, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, a show which ran during the early 90s.

Though Lucas sold the rights to Lucasfilm and the Star Wars film franchise to Disney back in 2012, the Star Wars creator continued earning thanks to his ownership of licensing and merchandising rights. In February 2012, the Star Wars series had brought in more than $20 billion in merchandise and $3.8 billion in home entertainment products. That's a whole lot of money, really.

Of course, Star Wars will continue earning for Lucas. We're expecting a major spike in toy releases as soon as we come close to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker releases this December. There's also a lot of anticipation for the fifth Indiana Jones film entry. Set to premiere in July 2021, Indiana Jones 5 begins filming next year.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to premiere on December 20, 2019.
