Game of Thrones Season 7 Production Will Take Just as Long as Earlier Seasons

This year, Game of Thrones will be back with far fewer episodes that it had experienced in its first six runs. This puts the show back on HBO come summer, though instead of the usual 10 episodes, we're now down to seven this year.

And yet according to a report from Entertainment Weekly, the production will still take just as long as it had in the previous seasons. Speaking in an interview, Ser Jorah actor Iain Glen stated that the technically longer wait that this brings is worth it for fans.

"They are taking the length of time it takes to shoot 10 episodes to shoot just seven this year and six next year. There are 15 more hours left in Thrones as we understand it, but that may change, but that's as far as we know."

Glen reiterated that the scale and size of the set pieces that would create the world is very much extraordinary as it is. Given that we had the Battle of the Bastards last year, and the fact that everyone is pretty much coming together for what could be an epic battle—amongst themselves or against the bigger foe, we'll have to see—it's pretty understandable that even fewer episodes will need more time.

This may also be the second to the last year that Game of Thrones will be aiming to sweep the awards bodies, as it did with the Emmy's. Sure, we still have the spin-off to look forward to, but until that comes as a confirmed and dated project, the original series can take its time perfecting each episode for an epic last two seasons.

Game of Thrones will be back on HBO comes summer this year.
