Game of Thrones’ ‘Red Wedding’ Actor on The Unexpected Return & the Future of His Character in Season 6

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Game of Thrones Season 6 Episode 6 – Blood of My Blood. You have been warned.

In this Sunday's episode of Game of Thrones, we see a couple of surprising appearances from characters in past seasons we didn't think we'd see again. This week, it's the return of Joseph Mawle's Benjen Stark, as well as Tobias Menzies' Edmure Tully.

Edmure's return is quite unforeseen since it's been nearly three years since his last appearance from the hit HBO series.

The character's return was also impactful since he didn't have any dialogue.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Menzies discussed his return to the show, as well as what it means for his character in the next episodes.

It seems that as much as Menzies was surprised that Edmure will return, Game of Thrones' producers were as well. Menzies said:

...I'm not sure they knew themselves. I think they've sort of found their way and chose what bits of the book they are doing. They just got in contact a little bit before we shot to see whether I was available, whether they could fit me in. It was a question of fitting in amongst my other commitments. But I'm a big fan of the show and was keen to make it work if I could.

The 42-year-old English actor also talked about how long Edmure had been imprisoned:

It might have only been like a year or something. It's unclear how much time has elapsed.

As for what comes next for Edmure, Menzies said:

He is still a prisoner of the Freys and then the Freys try and use him as bait to reclaim Riverrun, which is his ancestral home. And then Jamie Lannister gets involved. [Edmure] becomes a pawn in a large political fight. He ends up having to make a very difficult decision over whether to betray his family.

It looks like just about every character in the show are getting more challenged than ever. It's amazing watching these characters evolve from one season to the next, and I expect more exciting events to come for them in Season 6.

Game of Thrones airs Sundays on HBO at 9 p.m. EST.
