Fight Club Director David Fincher Takes A Jab At The MCU

Though the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the biggest and most profitable franchises in the Hollywood today, there are still some who think that the movies lack some substance and are popcorn flicks at best. Oscar-nominated director David Fincher thinks so, and he comments on the MCU's supposed lack of substance.

During an interview with Yellow King Film Boy to promote his series Mindhunter, Fincher explains:

"Look, there's a very large talent pool of people who are- don't feel there's much for them in terms of sustenance working for Marvel. And I think that if we can make a playground for them that is thoughtful, adult, interesting, complex, challenging stories and figure out ways to pull them into it, there's a chance at something that isn't lassoed and hogtied by three acts. And there's something else that doesn't have to be 22-minute half hour or have a cliffhanger. I think it is an exciting time."

I'll admit, I've been following the MCU religiously since 2008, and I understand how the movies can be considered a bit lacking when it comes to substance. Each MCU entry seems to come with a formula, and some of those ingredients include a forgettable villain and a big blue beam that shoots into the sky. There have been a few shake-ups here and there, but the skeleton of each film is always present.

Though some may critique Marvel for its overtly simplistic tones, you have to admit that the studio has done a massive accomplishment by establishing their cinematic universe—an accomplishment that many other studios, like the DCEU, is trying desperately to achieve.

Though the MCU may have its critics, the studio is undoubtedly successful and a lot of people definitely love the films. I'll admit, though I'm not as hooked to them as before, I'll still be the first guy in line to see a Marvel movie when it comes out.

The next MCU film in line is Thor: Ragnarok and it comes out Nov. 3.
