Falcon and Winter Soldier's Anthony Mackie Says the Best Filmmakers Make Movies for Streaming Services

Anthony Mackie might still be playing Falcon for the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier but the actor sure has Captain America-level balls. Despite starring in some of Disney's biggest movies, the actor basically called out Disney and a number of other big companies for not making "real movies" for theaters anymore. In a move that most of us didn't expect, Mackie said that the filmmakers that made "real movies" people used to love are now being made for streaming services.

Speaking with Collider, Mackie was pretty blunt about his thoughts on the movies being made for movie theaters, claiming only big event films are being made for those venues nowadays. It's not a surprising opinion to have if you're a hardcore movie critic but seeing these words come out of an actor who is on the Disney payroll is quite outstanding.

To be frank about it, filmmakers don't work in film anymore. If we look at the movies we grew up loving, that we think are the best movies of all time, those movies won't be made now by studios; they'll be made by streaming services. So if your movie isn't an event—if you're not in Avengers or Suicide Squad or Star Wars—it's very hard to get people to go to the movie theater, for many different reasons.

While this isn't burying Disney and Marvel, we'll leave that to Martin Scorsese, this is a refreshingly honest opinion from a pretty good actor. It's clear that Anthony Mackie still has the passion to make better movies and we look forward to seeing where they will be, whether it's Netflix, Amazon, or even Disney+ of all things.

Falcon and Winter Soldier is coming out this year for the Disney+ streaming service.
