Dunkirk Will Be Christopher Nolan’s Shortest Film Since ‘Following’

Modern blockbusters today seem to follow a uniform formula, and that formula requires them to have a runtime longer than two hours. For some reason, however, Christopher Nolan's upcoming film Dunkirk will run unusually short—the shortest since Nolan's first movie, Following.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dunkirk has a runtime of 1 hour and 47 minutes (107 minutes). Most of Nolan's more recent movies have passed way above the 2-hour mark, with Interstellar almost reaching 3 hours. Before Dunkirk, the only movies that Nolan had that ran less than 2 hours were Following (1 hour, 9 minutes) and Insomnia (1 hour, 58 minutes).

To be honest, I don't really know what to expect from Dunkirk. For one, I know that Nolan is pretty skilled when it comes to sci-fi, but with this movie based on real-life, I'm curious how he's going to bring those signature Nolan visuals into a war setting. I mean, we've seen it all before with movies like Saving Private Ryan, or more recently, Wonder Woman. I guess we'll just have to trust Nolan's judgement.

If I recall correctly, trailers for Nolan's movies have been pretty vague when it comes to selling the movie, but the movies themselves have always performed above and beyond. The trailer for Inception didn't even get me that excited, and that's one of my all-time favorite movies.

Dunkirk comes out a month from now, on July 21.
