'Dory' Beats 'Independence Day: Resurgence' at the Box Office

Pixar's Finding Dory overwhelmed Independence Day: Resurgence at North American theaters this weekend, placing itself on top of the box office this weekend. Resurgence debuted in second with a disappointing $41.6 million.

Disney and Pixar's record-smashing animated film grossed an impressive $73.2 million. Although the film saw a 46 percent decline compared to last week's earnings, Variety points out that it still makes for the best second weekend for an animated film ever and the eighth-highest across the board.

Independence Day: Resurgence, however, only performed 20 percent below expectations, still far from its $165 million budget, but the sequel to the 1996 science fiction film did top the international charts, so Fox is still hopeful. "There's still about 30 percent of the international footprint to go, so at the end of the day, this popcorn tentpole will be in good shape," Fox's Chris Aronson said (via THR).
