Domhnall Gleeson Almost Said No To Being In Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Domhnall Gleeson has had some great leading parts in movies like Frank, Ex Machina, and About Time, but he played side character General Hux in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. As it turned out, Gleeson had had second thought about being in Star Wars, and he almost said no to the job.

Talking to Radio Times, Gleeson admitted:

"Why would I have thought of saying no? Fame is the end goal for a lot of people but it is not mine. I worried that the accompanying fame would get in the way of how I live my life. It got a little crazy for a couple of months – for a while, going out and having a drink with my friends was difficult, and then it died down."

Though fame would certainly be an double-edged sword when it comes to celebrities, Gleeson's character was probably small enough not to gain that much attention as compared to the likes of John Boyega's Finn or Daisy Ridley's Rey.

There is also the issue of type-casting when it comes to Star Wars. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher probably had problems when getting new acting jobs after Star Wars, and you can just ask how hard it was for original cast members of Star Trek to get work after their show ended.

With The Force Awakens, however, typecasting doesn't seem to be that big of a problem. Ridley, Boyega, and the rest of the cast have been getting work in several other big movies, and as far as Gleeson's celebrity status goes, it's more or less the same.

Catch Domhnall Gleeson return as General Armitage Hux in Star Wars: The Last Jedi which comes out Dec. 15.
