Doctor Strange 2 Director Teases Innovative Takes on Multiverse

Scott Derrickson has certainly proved his mettle with Doctor Strange, especially with that great nomination at the Oscars.

So it's understandable that a lot of expectations are running high for the sequel of the Sorcerer Supreme's standalone movie. In an interview with ComingSoon, Derrickson teased a little about what they are planning in terms of the direction the story will take for the sequel.

He hinted that a lot of possibilities are now in the horizon following what the franchise introduced for the first movie. And one of the possibilities that it can touch on was the introduction of horror and supernatural in the universe, as is the rumored Nightmare dimension for the sequel.

"That's certainly where the comics went in the ‘80s, but I also think that was probably the weakest era of the comics. The alternate dimensions and possibilities of the multiverse that we set up with the first film already give limitless possibilities. What I will say is that the goal would not be to underutilize that, or to create something that was less innovative than the first Doctor Strange."

It seems that Derrickson's goal is to make sure that the sequel will follow in the footsteps that Doctor Strange creators Lee/Ditko went, which include "unexpectedly weird places and storylines."

On a personal note, I think Doctor Strange 2 would work well so long as the producers take cues from the original comics. The psychedelic break that it had from the other Marvel movie certainly gave it its own niche in the franchise, so a repeated success with the expected twist will probably work to push the said boundaries.

Doctor Strange is already out on Blu-ray and Digital. It's also up for nomination under the Best Visual Effects category.
