With Star Wars: The Last Jedi a month or so away from its release date and the sequel trilogy slowly closer to its final chapter, Disney has decided to unveil its plans for the future of the Star Wars franchise, announcing a new trilogy.

Posting on the official Star Wars website, Disney has finally announced its plans for a new Star Wars trilogy with Lucasfilm, this time under the direction of The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson.

Pleased with his work on the Force Awakens sequel, Lucasfilm has decided to give the reigns to the new trilogy to Johnson, allowing him to work on the next chapter of the franchise with his long-time collaborator, Ram Bergman. Together the two are set to write and helm the first installment in of the upcoming trilogy.

"We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi," Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. "Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can't wait to continue with this new series of films."

This news comes as no surprise. In a year full of directorial shake-ups, Lucasfilm has been nothing but pleased with Johnson and his work, so much so that many were expecting the studio to pass him Star Wars: Episode IX after it had fired Colin Trevorrow. Instead they had given the project to Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams, reserving Johnson for the new trilogy after 2020.

Looks like Star Wars has a long future ahead of it.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi makes its big premiere on December 15, 2017.
