Dennis Villeneuve Originally Wanted To Cast David Bowie In Blade Runner 2049

In another life, Blade Runner 2049's villain, Neander Wallace, would have been played by the legendary musician, David Bowie.

Ever since Bowie's passing last year, a number of filmmakers have opened up, revealing that they tried to reach out to him and cast the music legend in their video projects before liver cancer took his life. Not only did Marvel director James Gunn want to cast Bowie as one of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's original Ravagers, but David Lynch had also tried to contact the musician about returning to Twin Peaks: The Return as the original series' Phil Jeffries.

Speaking in an interview with Metro, Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve admitted that he was one of the filmmakers that had looked to casting Bowie, saying that he had wanted the musical legend to star in his Blade Runner sequel as Neander Wallace.

Unfortunately, the singer had passed away right before he could be approached by Villeneuve, and the part ended up with infamous method actor and musician, Jared Leto, instead.

"Our first thought [for the character] had been David Bowie, who had influenced Blade Runner in many ways. When we learned the sad news, we looked around for someone like that."

While we don't doubt the vivacious effort Leto's been putting into the role, we wonder what Bowie would have brought to the table had he remained alive and accepted Villeneuve's offer. What would Bowie's Neander Wallace look like? Guess we'll never know.

Blade Runner 2049 hits cinemas October 6, 2017.
