Deadpool 2: Some Jokes from the Trailers will be Cut; Film may Reference Solo: A Star Wars Story

The latest trailer for Deadpool 2 had some great jabs at Avengers: Infinity War and the DC Universe, but it looks like not all of those jokes will make the final cut of the film.

Talking to Fandango, director David Leitch confirms:

"There might be one punchline that we had three versions for and we loved them all, and only one can live in the movie, so we might have snuck a couple in sort of additional materials that people can discover. Like, "Oh my God, he used to say this, but now he says this." They're not plot changing, they're just really punchlines to the jokes, or pop culture references that Ryan is a genius coming up with."

Will all these jabs at other competing films, Leitch was also asked if there were any references to Solo: A Star Wars Story which opens a week after Deadpool 2's release. Leitch said:

"[Laughs] I think we might have a couple comments in the film. That would be fun for people to hear those jokes. They're definitely fresh and timely when they come up."

Though I do love references and in-jokes, the problem with them is that they can end up aging pretty badly; just ask the people who work on the Scary Movie franchise. If Deadpool does end up making a jab at Solo, I hope it's all in good taste. It's also worth noting that Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has publicly expressed his confidence that Deadpool will beat out Solo in the box office.

With Deadpool2 moving its release date to the middle of May, the film has done a ballsy move trying to compete with the likes of Avengers: Infinity War and a Star Wars movie. Let's hope Reynolds, Leitch, and the whole Deadpool 2 team bring something everyone will love.

Deadpool 2 comes out May 18.
