DCEU Storyboard Artist On How Dragon Ball And Anime Inspired Man Of Steel

It might sound odd, but Dragon Ball actually inspired Man of Steel.

Taking to Twitter to answer questions from fans, DC Extended Universe storyboard artist Jay Olivia was asked whether he was interested in anime. The artist responded to the question positively, not only saying that he loved anime, but that his Man of Steel fight was him basically "riffing off of Dragonball Z and countless other animated series/films I love."

After spilling the beans about Man of Steel being influenced by anime, Olivia went into deeper detail how the genre influenced the climactic fight in Man of Steel. Not only did the enormous battle take scenes from Dragon Ball, it was also influenced by Birdy the Mighty.

"Zack and his crew used what they liked and added some stuff but it's basically all there. I was the one who showed Birdy to Zack to illustrate the tone and energy I was trying get at," the artist admitted online.

During meetings, the artist also pitched his battles for Man of Steels with an anime angle.

"That's how I pitched it when we were brainstorming since a lot of the stuff that was brought up we had already done in the Wb animated films/series, ‘If you want, I could come up with something I've never seen in live action American cinema and only in anime,'" Olivia explained.

It's pretty interesting to see how anime influenced Man of Steel. Though we initially can't see the anime influence in the battle between, it's interesting to see how these anime fights have been translated to the big screen for a superhero film like Man of Steel.
