Dave Gibbons Thinks That Watchmen’s Also To Blame For Batman V Superman’s Failings

Though there was a lot of excitement over Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice during the film's marketing campaign, the movie became a divisive DC Extended Universe installment with many criticizing Zack Snyder's dark cinematography and heavy-handed storytelling. Though the blame's been put on both Snyder and Warner Brothers, English comic artist Dave Gibbons believe that Alan Moore's Watchmen should also be blamed for Batman V Superman's failings.

Speaking in an interview with Comic Book, the Watchmen comic book artist admitted that he felt a bit guilty that he and Moore "instituted the idea of dark superheroes."

"I know no more than you about Matthew being involved with a Superman movie. To me, off the cuff, it sounds like a really good idea. And I do think it's the way that these things are evolving. You know, there was a time when superheroes had to be really dark. And I think of the Dark Knight movies. And of course, I also feel a bit guilty, because Alan Moore and I very much kind of instituted the idea of dark superheroes. We never thought it would persist for 25 years, you know."

While Gibbons might think that he and Moore's to blame for the rise of dark superheroes, the idea of heavy and layered superhero movies isn't a bad idea. The problem with Batman v Superman was its Snyder's delivery and his chopped storytelling.

However, now that Warner Bros. has learned that heavy-handed and self-serious storytelling doesn't fare so well amongst fans, the studio's been trying to out a friendlier and funnier approach in the DCEU.

Snyder's next film, Justice League, is scheduled to hit cinemas November 17, 2017.
