Dark Souls 3 Developer Says It “Wouldn't Be Right to Continue Creating Souls”

Hidetaka Miyazaki, the head of Dark Souls and Bloodborne developer FromSoftware, intends to move on from the RPG series. This might be grim news for fans, especially considering that Miyazaki is the father of the series. "I don't think it'd be the right choice to continue indefinitely creating Souls and Bloodborne games," Miyazaki says in an interview with GameSpot. "I'm considering Dark Souls 3 to be the big closure on the series. That's not just limited to me, but FromSoftware and myself together want to aggressively make new things in the future." Miyazaki goes on to say that "There will be new types of games coming from us, and Dark Souls 3 is an important marker in the evolution of FromSoftware."

FromSoftare has certainly created a legacy with the Souls games, which are notorious for their difficulty. It's sad to see the studio go in a different direction, though Miyazaki didn't specify whether or not they will make more Souls games down the road. At the same time, I'm very interested to see the next big project that the team comes up with. Especially if they want to "aggressively make new things in future." It seems they will need to break from the gameplay style and gothic aesthetic that define the Souls games.

Hidetaka Miyazaki isn't finished with the series yet though, because we still have Dark Souls 3 to look forward to. Miyazaki and his team and been working tirelessly on the upcoming RPG, and it's sure to be a huge release, especially if this is the final chapter in the Souls franchise. After the success of Bloodborne, I think the studio is well-equipped to create one more brilliant action RPG.
