Dan Harmon Tells Fans Rick And Morty Is Meant To Be Obsessed Over

With a show as large a cult following as Rick and Morty, there have been numerous theories and speculations about the show online; though some may find this level of scrutiny irritating, co-creator Dan Harmon actually welcomes it, and says that the show is something people are meant to analyze over and over again.

Talking to EW, Harmon explains:

"You can't read too much into Rick and Morty; it's there for your obsession. I've heard theories that include the idea that Rick believes in the simulation theory so therefore he thinks he's a written character on a show in a different universe. I would never tell anybody that that is untrue. Why would it have to be untrue — until the moment it needs to be in order for a story to get told?"

Over the course of the show, there have been several theories that have popped up including the speculation that the Rick has a "suicide helmet" lying around in his garage in plain sight as well as the theory that Beth's mother is actually Unity.

Talking about the simulation theory, Harmon has also said that he has had fights with co-creator Justin Roiland about going too meta with the jokes, but they are apparently doing no harm to Rick as a character. He goes on:

"Rick is just being like Daffy Duck. He's allowed to mug to the camera like Bruce Willis did sometimes in Moonlighting. [Co-creator Justin Roiland] and I have had arguments about when it's okay to do that and when it's not. I have lost more of those arguments than I've won. And in spite of trying to convince Justin that it would ruin the show eventually if we continue to do that at the wrong times, and I guess I was wrong. Nobody has stopped believing Rick is real."

By now Rick and Morty3 is down to its last episode; hopefully Roiland and Harmon have something amazing in mind for the end.
