Could Blade Runner 2049 Join The Oscar Race Despite Being A Commercial Flop?

Blade Runner 2049 might not have been a box office success despite receiving a wave of positive reviews from fans and critics, however it seems like Denis Villeneuve's sequel to Scott Ridley's 1982 Blade Runner could potentially be considered for this year's Oscars.

With its beautiful cinematography and its intense but slow-burning story, publications like Vanity Fair predict that the film could find itself joining the race for this year's Academy Awards, hoping that the film could finally score an Oscar for cinematographer Roger Deakins.

Though nominations for the Director and Best Actor and Actress categories in prestigious film competitions seem highly unlikely given that none of the performances don't seem as strong enough to gain enough support to make it to the top five of each list, Blade Runner 2049 is indubitably a technical masterpiece.

Besides, who knows, Blade Runner 2049 might jump into the Academy Awards the same way George Miller's dystopian science fiction movie Mad Max: Fury Road did back in 2015.

Though the film's story didn't seem like it could push Fury Road into the Oscars, the film earned nominations for Best Picture and Best Director at the Academy Awards. Because of its visual and technical mastery, Fury Road dominated the Academy Award's craft categories, including Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Make-Up and Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing and Best Editing.

It's very likely that Blade Runner 2049 could follow in the same footsteps and go on to the Academy Awards receiving the same technical accolades.

Blade Runner 2049 is currently screening in cinemas.
