Chris Evans on Why He Said "No A Few Times" to Playing Captain America

Chris Evans is as courageous as Captain America in his life decisions.

On Monday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, Evans was asked why he was reluctant to play the career-defining role that he will be portraying on the big screen for the seventh time in Captain America: Civil War.

Apparently, the 34-year-old actor had been scared at first.

He told Kimmel:

I was scared because at first it was a nine-picture contract, and there are parts of me that have a little bit of social anxiety with this industry.
Doing movies one at a time, if all of a sudden you decide you don’t want to do them anymore, you’re afforded the opportunity to take a step back and recalibrate. When you have a giant contract, if all of a sudden you’re not responding well, too bad, you gotta suit up again. That was scary.

Obviously, in the end, he found the courage to play the star-spangled superhero in the MCU after saying “no a few times” and discussing the decision with his family and friends.

He told the late show host:

It started to kind of make sense that I was saying no out of fear. You can’t be doing something because you’re scared. So it ended up kind of clicking to me in the way of looking at it as ‘whatever you’re scared of, push yourself into it.’

You can take a look at the interview below:

While Evans is no man with superpowers in real life, it’s still quite courageous to push yourself into doing something that you’re afraid of.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6.
