Babylon 5 Creator Confirms Discussion to be Next Doctor Who Showrunner

It has already been confirmed that Chris Chibnall will be leaving Doctor Who after the upcoming season. But who will take over as the new showrunner of the beloved series? J. Michael Straczynski has just confirmed that he has met with BBC on possibly becoming the new executive producer when Chibnall departs next year.

Straczynski has been campaigning to become the next Doctor Who showrunner for some time now and amazingly, it looks like he already has one foot in the door. A fan recently reached out to the Sense8 co-creator asking if Straczynski had been discussing things over with BBC. Interestingly, Straczynski retweeted the post with an awesome response.

"Contact with the BBC has been made. They're going through their own process, which began before my tweet, and that has to run its course, but if those don't pan out and there's a discussion to be had, they will reach out. Very courteous, so we'll see where their process leads," Straczynski wrote.

This is a promising update considering that Doctor Who could be in for a major change if Straczynski takes over. In addition to that, the Babylon 5 creator will be the first non-British showrunner of the long-running show.

For now, BBC has not yet made an announcement about who will be in charge of Doctor Who. However, there is a possibility that an update will be made soon after the premiere of Doctor Who Season 13.

Chibnall is not the only one leaving Doctor Who after the upcoming season. Jodie Whittaker is expected to step down as the Time Lord next year. However, her replacement has not yet been announced.

Doctor Who Season 13 has not yet been given an official release date but is expected to premiere in late 2021.
