Avengers: Endgame Director Explains Why Captain America Passed On The Mantle To Falcon

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.

While most fans felt like Captain America (Chris Evans) deserved the ending that he received in Avengers: Endgame which allowed Steve to live the life that he had always wanted to live, many wondered why the film passed on the Captain America mantle to Falcon (Anthony Mackie) instead of the Winter Soldier, Bucky (Sebastian Stan).

Speaking in an interview with ComicBook.com and writer Brandon Davis, Endgame co-director decided to explain why he and his brother decided to pass on the Captain America mantle to Falcon instead of fan-favorite bucky.

According to the director, one of the main reasons why the role was given to Falcon was because it all just made sense.

"That hasn't been resolved for him and Sam has his free will and I think that Sam also had a similar ethic as Cap as far as service goes in the military," Russo says in his interview with ComiBook.com/

Not only that, but Russo also explains that Falcon's overall experience with the Avengers makes him the perfect character to take on the Captain America mantle.

"Sam still retains that spirit of service to the community and he lives in that circle very clearly in the movies," Russo explains.

The Winter Soldier does have a darker and more serious narrative. It's hard to imagine Bucky taking on the Captain America role for good.

We'll have to wait and see what happens soon. Marvel might have new plans for its upcoming Disney+ projects.

Avengers: Endgame is currently screening in cinemas.
