There is little doubt that Avengers: Endgame is well on its way to break people's hearts and box office records. Although we can't do anything about your broken hearts, we are glad to report that the Marvel Cinematic Universe flick that did it has just demolished its first box office record.
According to ComicBook.com, Avengers: Endgame has just made an estimated $157.5 million on Friday. This includes the $60 million made from Thursday night previews. Interestingly, the biggest opening day box office record was originally held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens at $119.1 million. This means that Endgame has completely obliterated TFA's opening day earnings by more than $38 million.
It's highly unlikely that Endgame will slow down anytime soon. Projections for the film's opening weekend total are currently set in the $349-$356 million range. This will undoubtedly break more records. Additionally, the MCU flick is expected to earn more than $1 billion globally on the opening weekend alone.
This doesn't really come as a surprise. When Endgame premiered in other countries like China and Australia, millions of fans descended into theaters and tickets were immediately sold out. There is little doubt that the Marvel film will continue to earn more in the following weeks as well.
Marvel Studios might be the winner for now but Star Wars still has a trick up their sleeve. There is a huge possibility that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will take the challenge and aim for a record-breaking opening day as well. Either way, Disney should win.
The synopsis for Endgame reads as follows:
"The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios' grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame."
