Ant-Man and the Wasp: Evangeline Lilly Didn’t Want the Wasp to ‘Fight Like a Man’

Captain Marvel may be coming out next year, but this week gives us our first lady in the MCU with actual powers. Evangeline Lilly talks about playing the role of the Wasp, and how different her fighting style is in this film compared to the first.

Lilly told The Hollywood Reporter that she wanted the Wasp to have her own womanly fighting style this time around. She explains:

"In her fight scenes, as trivial as it might seem, I really pushed and fought for her to fight with elegance, grace and femininity. She moves differently than a man. I wanted her to have a signature style that little girls, like I was when I was a feminine, girly little girl, would be able to fall in love with, emulate and relate to in their own movements."

When we did Ant-Man I had to study a little bit of Muay Thai and MMA style fighting. And MMA style fighting is distinctly masculine, it's got a very masculine posture and a very masculine attack, and that was so difficult for me because I don't move that way naturally. I really wanted to change that in this film. I wanted to move the way my body wants to move, as a more graceful, feminine woman."

With Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman proving that little girls can still love women who can kick ass, I think the Wasp from this movie proves to be a fun addition to female superheroes.

While Hope was usually the stickler in the previous Ant-Man movie, Lilly was said to have pushed director Peyton Reed to make the character someone who can have fun as well. Instead of the usual ‘scolding mother' type, Ant-Man and the Wasp actually gives us a Hope Van Dyne who looks like she loves what she does.
