Shogun star Anna Sawai revealed that she was forced to turn down an audition for a major role in Suicide Squad.

The actress is currently having a breakthrough moment in her acting career thanks to her acclaimed performance as Lady Mariko in the FX limited series. She also recently starred in another hit series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

However, as it turns out, she had an opportunity years ago to audition for a major superhero franchise but she was forced to skip it due to a work commitment at that time.

In a recent interview, Sawai revealed that she had an opportunity to audition for the role of Katana in Suicide Squad.

Unfortunately, she was forced to turn down as the management company of her J-Pop group FAKY did not allow her to proceed.

"I was like, ‘This is my chance!’ And then I go to my manager and he’s like, ‘You can’t audition.’ They basically told me that if I’m gone for over a month, the girls [the other members of FAKY] are not going to have anything to do," the Shogun star recalled.

Sawai tried to convince the management that the opportunity could help the group, but it didn't change their mind.

"It felt like they were really tying me down, and because of my contract, I couldn’t leave until the time that I actually left [in 2018]," she said.

As we all know, Karen Fukuhara ended up getting the role. However, she didn't appear in other DCEU projects but went on to star in the hit Prime Video series The Boys.

"She did an amazing job, and I respect her so much, and I love her," Sawai said about Fukuhara. "But also, I would have loved to audition for it."

Fortunately for Sawai, things still went well for her in the end as she now stars in a couple of hit TV series and is currently considered to be a major Emmy contender for Shogun.

Who knows, perhaps Sawai could also end up joining the DCU at some point if an opportunity presents itself and, this time around, she has the free reign to do an audition.
