J.J. Abrams on What Surprised Him the Most in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

J.J. Abrams might respect Rian Johnson's creative decisions in the franchise, however, the director of the upcoming Wars: The Rise of Skywalker can't help but admit that there was one thing in particular that surprised him about Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Speaking in an interview with the Rolling Stone, the Star Wars director was asked to comment on The Last Jedi. While Star Wars: Episode VIII was nothing short of commercial and critical success for Disney and for Lucasfilm, the movie also became one of the most divisive entries in the Star Wars franchise. Dissenters complain about various things in the movie, but most complain about the way the film subverted fan expectations and the way the film "misused" legacy characters like Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

Though Abrams says that he did enjoy The Last Jedi, the director explains in the interview with Rolling Stone that he was surprised by how dark Luke had become in the film.

"I felt the biggest surprise was how dark Luke was. That was the thing that I thought: 'Oh, that was unexpected.' And that's the thing The Last Jedi undeniably succeeds at, which is constant subversion of expectation," the director tells the entertainment news outlet, "The number of things that happened in that movie that aren't the thing you think is going to happen is pretty fun."

There were quite a lot of subverted moments in The Last Jedi. Not only did the film have Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) cut Supreme Leader Snoke into two, but it also revealed Rey's (Daisy Ridley) parents as the daughter of two nobody junkers in Jakku.

We can only wonder what kind of surprises The Rise of Skywalker might hold for everyone.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
