Star Wars: Rey's Palpatine Connection was Actually Teased in The Last Jedi

Most fans were probably shocked when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker revealed that Rey is actually the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine. However, it looks like the connection was actually revealed in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

In The Rise of Skywalker, Rey went back to Ahch-To where she encountered the Force Ghost of Luke Skywalker. Interestingly, Luke tells Rey that he had always known about her origins. However, one fan pointed out that Luke bluntly tells Rey he has no idea about her when they were at the Jedi Tree in The Last Jedi.

So was this just a huge mistake? Jason Ward of Making Star Wars has shed some light on the subject. Take a look at his tweet in response to the fan's question below.

"When I was told about what the Skywalkers knew about Rey, it was that Luke was cut off from the force and didn't know until she went to the darkness and he was rocked by that raw power. FWIW," he wrote.

This should explain why Luke was initially unsure about Rey in The Last Jedi and became terrified when she went straight into the Darkness. After all, it seemed like Rey was destined to fulfill what Palpatine had started in the original trilogy. Nevertheless, we're glad that Rey chose her own path in The Rise of Skywalker.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is still screening in theaters worldwide.
