When we think of Muzan, we think of a malevolent being of unparalleled strength and ruthlessness. But before becoming the epitome of evil, Demon Slayer’s Muzan suffered from a grave illness that almost took his life.
Similar to other characters in Demon Slayer, Muzan Kibutsuji has an interesting back story that every fan should know about to get a bigger picture of his motivation, goal, and significant role in the story.
Muzan Kibutsuji Was a Stillborn Baby in Demon Slayer
There are many anime villains born with amazing powers and abilities, but Muzan Kibutsuji stands out owing to his unique but intriguing case. He was not endowed with any exceptional abilities or born with a powerful body.
Contrary to initial belief, Muzan Kibutsuji's heart stopped several times while he was still in his mother's womb, resulting in a persistent struggle for survival during the Heian period.
He was a stillborn baby, delivered to the world with no pulse or heartbeat. In modern times, a stillborn baby means fetal death, a dead baby at the time of birth, or an unsuccessful pregnancy.
This situation convinced a lot of people that Muzan should be cremated as soon as possible.
Fortunately, before he turned into nothing, Muzan, for whatever reason, managed to let out his first cry.
Still, his struggle to survive continued owing to an incurable illness that had struck his already frail and feeble human body.
Muzan Kibutsuji Almost Died Due to an Incurable Illness in Demon Slayer
Due to his condition, Muzan suffered from thanatophobia, or intense fear of death.
No medicine could improve his condition, leading to a fatal diagnosis that said he would die before reaching the age of 20 years old.
One doctor, in particular, didn’t stop at finding ways to treat Muzan. He did everything in his power to cure Muzan, going so far as to use a special experimental medicine that contains a rare mythical flower called the Blue Spider Lily.
The medicine didn’t work at first, leading to the death of the doctor in Muzan’s hands.
He was frustrated with the doctor, but he would later regret the decision to kill him due to the sudden improvement of his body, which the murdered doctor could only explain.
Thus, the demon Muzan, the first of his kind, was born. He quickly realized that consuming human flesh could help him survive, leading to his early murders in the series.
Muzan Kibutsuji Longs for Perfection and Immortality in Demon Slayer
As the plot unfolds, Muzan learns about his inability to walk under the sunlight, resulting in his obsession to become a perfect being.
He spent so much time doing experiments that could help his sun problem but to no avail.
At some point, Muzan decided to change his ways. He started to create demons in the hopes that one of them could be immune to sunlight, not to mention ordering them to find the mythical Blue Spider Lily.
