There was a time when fans were happy about Disney's hiring of D.B. Weiss and David Benioff for a new Star Wars trilogy. Then again, this was before the final season came out and everyone swore off anything the two would be working on, though it could be argued that it's an extreme reaction. In everyone's defense, we all had an extreme reaction when watching the final season of Game of Thrones and it wasn't a positive one.
Well, fans might be relieved to know that Benioff and Weiss might only write one Star Wars film of their supposed trilogy. When The Hollywood Reporter discussed their big Netflix deal, it said that Disney would have them write at least one Star Wars movie, so that's something. To be fair, this could be a chance for the duo to redeem themselves, especially since they had to skip their SDCC panel to avoid fan backlash.
Having Benioff and Weiss produce the other two Star Wars movies isn't a bad call since they will still be actively involved in the film's production. Still, if Game of Thrones fans had it their way, the duo wouldn't even be involved with this franchise. Hopefully, they end their trilogy in a much better way than having Jon Snow stab his queen while a dragon burns the throne because of symbolism.
As someone who isn't a huge Game of Thrones fan, even I could tell that the final season was of low quality. Still, the showrunners did successfully adapt five of the show's seasons and should be commended for that. Then again, their Star Wars work will be mostly original, just like their Game of Thrones finale, which is a bit worrisome.
Game of Thrones can be binge-watched on HBO GO and the upcoming HBO Max streaming service. Benioff and Weiss' Star Wars trilogy is expected to come out on December 2022, if Disney's plans come into fruition. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is coming out this December.
