In what is no doubt unexpected but exciting news for classic anime fans, Adult Swim has announced that it is bringing back beloved anime with its newly launched Toonami Rewind block, which will premiere very soon.

Adult Swim Goes Back in Time with New Toonami Rewind Block

Adult Swim’s Toonami block was known as the go-to place to watch classic American and Japanese animated series such as ThunderCats, Voltron, and Space Ghost.

It has also aired several notable anime through the years, including FLCL: Grunge and Shoegaze and the recent 2024 breakout hit Ninja Kamui.

Now, Toonami is returning to its roots with the launch of a new block called Toonami Rewind, where fans can watch classic anime such as Dragon Ball Z Kai, Naruto, and Sailor Moon.

The announcement was made with a 30-second video featuring clips from the three shows. It also teases the enhanced quality fans may expect from the upcoming broadcast.

Toonami Rewind to Feature Dragon Ball Z Kai, Naruto, and Sailor Moon

The new Toonami Rewind block will air every Friday beginning May 31 at 5:00 PM EDT. First on the lineup is Sailor Moon, with the newer Viz Media English dub version.

The new block will also feature Dragon Ball Z Kai, which is the condensed version of the original Dragon Ball Z series, and Naruto.

Here is the full lineup of shows on May 31:

5:00 PM EDT – Sailor Moon
5:30 PM EDT – Dragon Ball Z Kai
6:00 PM EDT – Dragon Ball Z Kai
6:30 PM EDT – Naruto

It is expected that newer versions of the anime will be aired, as Toonami co-creator Jason DeMarco previously revealed through his X account that Toonami Rewind will use “classic older Toonami music and some older packaging” remastered in HD.

There is no information yet on what other anime will be streamed on Toonami Rewind after its premiere, but more announcements will likely follow in the coming weeks.
