While the next Makoto Shinkai project might not come out anytime soon, fans have a new movie to look forward to. That's because one of the artists who worked on Your Name and Garden of Words, Yoshitoshi Shinomiya, has just revealed a new original film titled A New Dawn.

Shinomiya is probably best known for his work as a background artist for Makoto Shinkai’s Garden of Words and the mega-hit anime movie Your Name.

A New Dawn will mark his directorial debut in a feature-length title.

A New Dawn is set in a 330-year-old fireworks factory and store that is about to face forced eviction.

The film follows the story of three young people who grew up around the fireworks factory and the two days surrounding the phantom fireworks called Shuhari.

While not many details are revealed regarding the plot, creator Shinomiya shared how the idea for the film started back in 2016.

He revealed that he took inspiration from the changing landscape of Japan, which felt very meaningful to him at the time. Thus, the story for A New Dawn began to take shape.

The upcoming movie is a collaboration between the Japanese company ASMIK Ace (live-action xxxHOLiC movie) and the French studio Miyu Productions (Ghost Cat Anzu).

Meanwhile, director Shinomiya is joined by main staff members who are also notable figures in the anime industry.

For instance, the character designs will be handled by Utsushita (Heavenly Delusion), with Akiko Majima (Suzume) contributing as an artist, and Shuta Hasunuma as the film’s composer.

The movie will be screened on May 19 at the Annecy Animation Showcase at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in France. Director Shinomiya will present the film along with a behind-the-scenes video at the said event.

While A New Dawn will be screened next month in France, it is slated to be released in Japanese theaters sometime in 2025. For now, there’s no word yet on the movie’s specific release date next year.

There are also no international release plans for the film as of writing.
