With the popular duo being tapped for the new Monogatari anime’s theme song, it’s now the perfect time to look back at the best YOASOBI anime songs.

Even though there are other, more prolific bands and artists in anime, YOASOBI has quickly built up a repertoire of memorable and catchy anime songs.

This is impressive considering that YOASOBI is still fairly young, with the duo exploding in popularity only in 2020.

So, before the duo releases their latest anime song, here’s a ranking of YOASOBI’s best anime songs so far.

  1. Pokémon – Biri-Biri

Technically, Biri-Biri is not an anime song, as it’s not an opening for Pokémon Horizons. Instead, it’s a song released in November 2023 to commemorate the anniversary of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

This song features the duo’s signature energetic electronic beats combined with singer Lilas Ikuta’s distinct singing voice.

While it’s a bit more chill than their usual songs, it’s still very much a bop, enough that it delighted fans during the duo’s Coachella performance.

  2. Gundam: Witch from Mercury – The Blessing

Gundam made its long-awaited anime series return with Witch from Mercury in the fall of 2022, and with it came YOASOBI’s The Blessing, which was the opening theme of the anime’s first cour.

The song works well for the anime’s first half as its bouncy pop vibe effectively mirrors the lighter elements of the initial story parts, though the song also captures some of the darker themes of the anime.

  3. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End – The Brave

When it comes to fantasy anime, chances are that you’ll think of a medieval-sounding track produced with older instruments such as lutes.

While that is the case with the Frieren soundtrack, its opening theme The Brave by YOASOBI is wildly different.

Even though YOASOBI was tapped to produce the first Frieren anime opening, the duo kept their signature electronic sound, which does not sound at all like a typical fantasy song, but it somehow works.

It helps that the song is quite catchy, coupled with the fact that it works as a nice counterbalance to the more subdued feel of the anime’s soundtrack and its story as a whole.

  4. Beastars Season 2 – Monster

Beastars season 1’s opening theme by ALI was a tough act to follow, but YOASOBI did an excellent job with Monster, the opening song of the show’s second season.

Aside from its incredibly catchy beat and chorus, the song is impressive for effectively blending a multitude of genres, from pounding EDM to math rock elements.

To top it off, the song’s lyrics are about a carnivore trying to coexist with herbivores – a reflection of the anime’s story as the wolf Legoshi struggles with his world, along with his feelings for the rabbit Haru.

  5. Oshi no Ko – Idol

There’s no doubt that YOASOBI’s song Idol for Oshi no Ko is their best anime work yet, and it’s even one of their best tracks to date.

Taken on its own, the song is exceptional in how it blends the duo’s signature sound with Japanese idol-style flourishes.

It’s also a huge earworm, as even listening to it just once will have you humming the chorus.

What makes it their best work though is how well it captures the spirit of the anime. One of Oshi no Ko’s biggest appeals is how it explores the darker sides of the glitzy entertainment industry.

In that sense, Idol is a perfect reflection of this, as the song’s infectious pop energy has a rather sinister undercurrent.
